A bin man who feared he would go blind when he burned his eyes with hot oil after a cable broke as the rear of the rubbish truck has been award €15,565 in damages from the Circuit Court.

The bin man took a personal injury* claim against his employers for negligence and breach of duty. The Judge of the Circuit Court was told that the bin man had been collecting bins in the Sandyford Road, County Dublin when hydraulic cables at the rear of the rubbish truck broke. The bin man claimed that he was sprayed with hot oil in his eyes and was unable to see anything.

First aid was applied by ambulance men who arrived quickly at the scene of the accident. The bin man was then taken to the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital in Dublin. The Court heard that the bin man was in pain and he feared that he would go blind. The bin man had his eyes rinsed at the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital and he was prescribed eye drops.

The Judge of the Circuit Court told that the bin man felt pain in his left eye for several weeks after the accident and his vision had been blurred. The Court also heard that the man was unable to drive and was out of work for a week. The Judge was told that the case was for assessment of damages only and the man was awarded €15,565 in damages.
