A member of the senior Laois hurling panel has been awarded €20,000 in compensation following personal injuries* he suffered as a result of a road traffic accident that occurred four years ago.
The hurler who was under 18 at the time of the accident sued through his father. The hurler was a rear seat passenger in a car that was struck behind by a vehicle that was trying to overtake them. The hurler, through his father, took a personal injuries claim against the man driving the car who crashed into them, the owner of the car and the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland (MIBI). The MIBI were included in the proceedings as the driver of the vehicle was uninsured and they compensate victims injured as a result of uninsured drivers.
The court was told that the hurler suffered physical and psychological personal injuries as a result of the road traffic accident. The case was before the court for assessment only and the award was against the MIBI.
